The importance of learning about this

  • Mistrusting Allah, having bad thoughts about him or evil suspicions is from amongst the things that can nullify one’s Islam
  • The following is a quote from the Book “Guide to the Sound Creed” by Shaykh Sâlih Al-Fawzân
    • “While keeping full trust in Allah is regarded as one ofthe pre-requisites of belief. mistrusting Allah runs counter to one’s monotheism. Almighty Allah has described the hypocrites as those who retain wrong thoughts about Him”

What types of thoughts are classed as having bad thoughts about Allah?

  • Ibnul Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) listed the following types of thoughts as examples of having bad thoughts about Allah or having evil suspicions about Allah
    • Those who do not have patience with the decree of Allah
      • How many there are who have these sort of thoughts? Especially when something bad happens to them
      • Those who are safeguarded from this are those who know their Lord, his names and attributes and his Lordship
      • The Decree of Allah will happen always. We do not know the wisdom behind the decree of Allah, and so it is important for a Muslim to have patience
    • Those who think the truth will not prevail
      • E.g. thinking Allah will not aid his Messenger or the believers
    • Whoever denies the decree of Allah
      • A person who rejects the decree of Allah or think that the decree of Allah does not have an effect, then indeed he has not recognised the greatness of his Lord
      • E.g. those who think events “just happen” by themselves
    • Whomsoever loses Hope in the Mercy of Allah
      • Those who lose hope in Allah or think they will not have mercy from Allah then indeed this type of person has thought evil about Allah
    • Those who think we do not have a purpose in Life
      • For example someone who thinks we are like the animals
      • What did Ibnul Qayyim say about this?
    • Those who think we will not have an afterlife
      • For example someone who thinks we will not be resurrected or have a judgement and that there will not be Paradise or Hellfire
  • Those who believe that their righteous actions in this world will be lost or wasted, or those who think Allah will punish him for something he did not have a choice in
  • Those who believe Allah will aid the disbelievers will miracles
  • Those who think that Allah has given us ambiguous indicators about his attributes which we then have to deduce for ourselves,
    • this is an evil thought about Allah as Allah did not leave us in ambiguity about Him rather he gave us clear verses about his names and attributes
  • The one who thinks that his own speech is upon the truth and that the speech of Allah is not entirely upon the truth thus he says he will select from Allah’s speech what he thinks to be the truth
    • This is from amongst the worst examples of having evil thoughts about Allah

For more detailed information check out Ibnul Qayyim’s book entitled “Zaad ul Ma’aad” (Provisions for the Hereafter).

Q&A:

  • Modern day self proclaimed “intellectuals”, “thinkers” and philosophers give priority over their intellect over what is in the holy text, does this fall under having evil thoughts about Allah?
  • Adhkar after salaah, is it read in an audible way or quietly?
  • Everyone claims they follow the Qur’an and Sunnah these days, how do we tell apart the correct path from the misguided sects?
  • Some misguided sects among the Muslims (e.g. ash’ari) reject some of the names and attributes of Allah while other sects compare Allah to creation, how do we judge what is the correct path?
