Lesson 6: Calling to the Worship of Allah alone

  • Naturally, all people recognise that they have a creator and Lord, this is based on their innate nature as well as observations of the world around them
  • However this alone is not sufficient
  • The Messengers (may peace be upon them all) focused their Dawah on calling to the worship of Allah alone
  • What did the Prophet (ﷺ) call the people to?
  • How did the polytheists at the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) oppose him? What was his response to them?
  • The Qur’an has mentioned different methods in calling to the worship of Allah alone

What is mentioned in the Qur’an?

  • Allah says: ”Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful;” [Surah An-Nisaa (The Women) verse 36]
  • Allah says: ”O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see V. 2:2). Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).” [Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) verses 21-22]
  • Allah says: ”And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).” [Surah Adh-Dhariyaat (The Winds that Scatter) verse 56]
  • Allah says: ”And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc.i. e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).” [Surah An-Nahl (The Bee) verse 36]
  • Allah says: ”And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him.” [Surah Al-Fussilat (They are Explained in Detail) verse 37]
  • Allah says: ”Is then He, Who creates as one who creates not? Will you not then remember?” [Surah An-Nahl (The Bee) verse 17]
  • Allah says: ”Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, so worship Him (Alone) and be constant and patient in His worship. Do you know of any who is similar to Him? (of course none is similar or coequal or comparable to Him, and He has none as partner with Him). [There is nothing like unto Him and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer].” [Surah Maryam (Mary) verse 65]
  • Allah says: ”And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do.” [Surah Al-A’raf (The Heights) verse 180]
  • Allah says: ”When he said to his father: “O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything?” [Surah Maryam (Mary) verse 42]
  • Allah says: ”If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad SAW) like Him Who is the AllKnower (of each and everything).” [Surah Al-Faatir (The Originator of Creation, or The Angels) verse 14]
  • Allah says: ”Do they attribute as partners to Allah those who created nothing but they themselves are created? No help can they give them, nor can they help themselves.” [Surah Al-A’raf (The Heights) verses 191 and 192]
  • Allah says: ”Say (O Muhammad SAW): “Call unto those besides Him whom you pretend [to be gods like angels, Iesa (Jesus), ‘Uzair (Ezra), etc.]. They have neither the power to remove the adversity from you nor even to shift it from you to another person.”” [Surah Al-Isra (The Journey by Night) verse 56]
  • Allah says: ”And they worship others besides Allah, such as do not and cannot own any provision for them from the heavens or the earth.” [Surah An-Nahl (The Bee) verse 73]
  • Allah says: ”O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! Those on whom you call besides Allah, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatched away a thing from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought.” [Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) verse 73]
  • Allah says: ”[Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: “Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you, nor harm you?” [Surah Al-Anbiya (The Prophets) verse 66]
  • Allah says: ”And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them?” [Surah Al-Ahqaf (The Curved Sand-hills) verse 5]
  • Allah says: ”When those who were followed, disown (declare themselves innocent of) those who followed (them), and they see the torment, then all their relations will be cut off from them. And those who followed will say: “If only we had one more chance to return (to the worldly life), we would disown (declare ourselves as innocent from) them as they have disowned (declared themselves as innocent from) us.” Thus Allah will show them their deeds as regrets for them. And they will never get out of the Fire.” [Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) verse 166-167]
  • Allah says: ”And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.” [Surah Surah An-Najm (The Star) verse 26]
  • Allah says: ””Say, [O Muhammad], Invoke those you claim (as deities] besides Allah. They do not possess an atom’s weight [of ability in the heavens or on the earth, and they do not have therein any partnership (with Him), nor is there for Him from among them any assistant. And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits…” [Surah As-Saba (Sheba) verses 22-23]
