40 Hadith #62: Hadith 41 & 42

Hadith 41 (Following the Prophet)

  • From Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd ِAllāh bin ʿAmr bin al-ʿĀṣ (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhumā) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam) said, “None of you truly believes until his inclination is in accordance with what I have brought.” [Related by al-Nawawī in Kitāb al-Ḥujjah]

Part 1: The authenticity of this Hadith

  • How did Imam An-Nawawi grade this hadith?
  • However other scholars have said this hadith is not authentic

Part 2: Regarding Concerning the statement of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) “None of you truly believe…”

  • What was the Prophet (ﷺ) mean when he said this?
  • Belief and faith (Eemaan) is of two types:
    • The foundational basic form of belief, what is this?
    • The perfected form of belief, what is this?
  • What are some examples of our inclination and desires going against the Qur’an and Sunnah

Part 3: Meaning of the word “Al-Hawa”

  • The word Al-Hawa (desires) is used in the hadith, there are two possible meanings:
    • First meaning: Inclination towards opposing the truth, what is the evidence?
    • Second meaning: Loving the truth and complying with it, what is the evidence?

  • What did Allah say? [Surah As-Saad verse 26]?

Part 4: Summary of benefits 

  1. The obligation of following the Prophet ﷺ in everything that he came with
  2. The degree of Eemaan (Belief) varies from one person to the next

  1. What is meant by the Prophet ﷺ when he sayS “none of you believes until…”, what is being negated here?
  2. What does the term Al-Hawa mean?

Hadith 42 (Allāh’s Vast Mercy)

  • From Anas (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam) saying: Allāh the Exalted has said, “O son of Ādam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Ādam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would in turn bring you forgiveness nearly as great as (the earth).” [Related by Tirmidhī]

Part 1: The positioning of this Hadith

Part 2: This Hadith is addressed to the Children of Adam

  • Means of pardoning (maghfirah) of sins:
    • Praying to Allah and 
    • hoping for pardoning of your sins, 
    • seeking forgiveness for those sins, 
    • being sincere to Allah and 
    • Keeping away from Shirk (polytheism) 
  • What does it mean to have pardoning  (maghfirah) of our sins?
    • Your sins being hidden
    • Allah overlooking your sins
    • Allah not punishing your for Your sins

Part 3: The slave calling upon his Lord for pardoning, hoping in that without despondency, alongside repenting from the sins brings about Allah’s Pardon even if the sins become huge, many and recurring 

  • The importance of having hope in Allah
  • Do not give up hope in your Lords Forgiveness
  • Allah is not the same as creation. When we do wrong against people, they may not forgive, often they will not overlook, and they will not be kind after a certain point. Allah is different.
  • What did Allah say [Surah Az-Zumar verse 53]?

Part 4: Concerning Allah’s statement “O son of Ādam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky”

  • What does the statement mean about the sins reaching the clouds of the sky?
  • The Vastness of Allah’s Mercy and Grace
  • What does Tawbah (Repentance) mean? How does one gain accepted repentance?
    • 1. Desist from the sin
    • 2. Regret over what has occurred
    • 3. Determination to not return to the sin in the future
  • If you commit sin against the right of Allah and it requires an expiation, then you must do it. What are some examples?
  • If you commit a sin against people then you must return their rights to them 

Part 5: Polytheism (Shirk)

  • Allah will not forgive polytheism if one dies upon it
  • Anything less than Shirk can be either forgiven or punished , this is under the Will of Allah
  • What about not committing shirk, but dying upon a major sin

Part 6: Summary of benefits 

  1. This Hadith shows the expanse of Allah’s Mercy and pardoning of his slave’s sins
  2. From the means of attaining pardon for sins is to pray to Allah, with hope, and without despondency
  3. The virtue of seeking forgiveness 
  4. Shirk will not be forgiveness
  5. The virtue of sincerity
