Lesson 50: Hadith 31 (Abstinence from the World) Part 2

Summary

  • To have more confidence and certainty concerning what is in the Hand of Allah for you of the dunya than what is in your hand
  • That your condition and state of mind when you are afflicted with a calamity, is the same as when you were not afflicted with it
  • That the one who praises you, and the one who rightfully criticises you are the same in your eyes
  • Abstain from (pursuing) what people possess and people will love you
  • What is the nature of human beings?
  • What happens when you crave what people have?

Hadith 31

  • From Sahl bin Saʿd al-Sāʿidī (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) who said: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: “O Messenger of Allāh, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allāh to love me and people to love me.” He said, “Abstain from (pursuit of) the world and Allāh will love you, and abstain from (pursuing) what people possess and people will love you.” [Related by Ibn Mājah]
  • Imam Nawawi graded this Hadith as Hasan (sound)

  • We need good companionship, so this is important

Part 4: Summary of the Benefits

  • 1. The keenness of the companions in seeking to know what will bring about the love of Allah and people’s love
  • 2. Establishing the attribute of Love for Allah
  • 3. The thing that is best for the slave, is that Allah loves him or her
  • 4. Abstaining from the pursuit of the world brings about the Love of Allah
  • 5. Abstaining from what is in the hands of people is a means of gaining their love and thus he benefits from them and avoids their harm
