Listen to the Full Khutbah
Overview
This khutbah explores the authentic Islamic understanding of Ruqya, the practice of spiritual healing through the Qur’ān and supplication.
Delivered by Ustādh Abu Muādh Taqweem, the talk clarifies:
- What Ruqya is and what it is not.
- The boundaries of permissible practice.
- How to avoid innovations and superstitions that go against the core principles of Tawḥīd.
Key Points Covered
- What is Ruqya?
- Healing with the words of Allāh (Qur’an) and authentic Prophetic supplications.
- It is not magic, not shirk, and not a mysterious power.
- What Invalidates Ruqya?
- Using talismans (تمائم), charms, or invoking spirits.
- Practicing Ruqya that calls upon other than Allāh.
- Any ritual or method not grounded in the Qur’ān or Sunnah.
- Correct Ruqya Must:
- Be performed with Tawḥīd and tawakkul (trust in Allāh).
- Use Arabic verses or duʿāʾs from the Prophet ﷺ.
- Avoid superstition, exaggeration, or fearmongering.
Qur’ān Verses Mentioned
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
“And when I am ill, it is He (Allāh) who cures me.”
— Surah Ash-Shuʿarāʾ (26:80)
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٌۭ وَرَحْمَةٌۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“And We send down in the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers.”
— Surah Al-Isrāʾ (17:82)
Prophetic Ḥadīth on Ruqya
عن جابر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:
“لكل داء دواء، فإذا أصيب دواء الداء برأ بإذن الله عز وجل”
“There is a cure for every disease, and when the correct remedy is applied, it cures by the permission of Allāh.”
— رواه مسلم (Muslim)
“We used to perform Ruqya in the pre-Islamic days, so we asked the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ: What do you think about it? He said: ‘Show me your Ruqya. There is nothing wrong with Ruqya as long as it does not contain shirk (polytheism).’”
— رواه مسلم (Muslim)
Important Lessons
- Ruqya is a mercy from Allāh — not something to fear or mystify.
- Daily adhkār, Qur’ān recitation, and sincere duʿāʾ are your first line of spiritual defense.
- Ruqya is most effective when performed with:
- Sincerity
- Clear tawḥīd
- Knowledge and humility
Avoid These Misconceptions
- Thinking Ruqya is only for the severely afflicted.
- Using unknown symbols, non-Arabic phrases, or unverified “spiritual healers.”
- Believing in the power of objects instead of the power of Allāh.
Spiritual Advice from the Lecture
“Ruqya is not just about healing from harm — it is a reminder to return to Allāh, purify your heart, and trust in His wisdom.”
“There is no harm nor benefit except by His decree. Ruqya reminds us of that every time we recite.”
