The Trial of the Grave

Life continues after death. The trial of the Grave is the event that occurs when a person is questioned in his or her grave after death.

  • There are two Angels, Al-Munkar and An-Nakeer, who carry out the questioning
  • What are the 3 questions that every person is
    • Who is your Lord?
    • What is your Religion
    • Who is your Prophet
  • Question: Why is it called the “trial” of the grave?
  • Question: What is the evidence that the trial will occur?
  • Question: What if someone dies but wasn’t buried in a grave?
  • Question: Is the trial of the grave for all of humanity or is it only for this Ummah?
  • 💡Those who are Exempt: There are certain types of people who will NOT be put through the trial of the grave. Who are they?
    1. The Prophets and Messengers
    2. The Martyrs
    3. The Border Guard
    4. The one who dies on Friday or the Night of Friday (i.e. Thurs night)

The Soul

  • We all have a soul within us
  • We do not know much about the Soul
  • When a person dies, the soul leaves his or her body
  • 💡Ibn Qayyim said the Soul is connected to the body in 5 different ways:
    1. The first connection, when an Angle breathes the Soul is breathed into the body of the Baby whilst still inside the womb
    2. The connection of the Soul to the person whilst he or she is alive on this earth
    3. The connection of the Soul to the person whilst he or she is sleeping. The Soul is both connected and disconnected simultaneously.
    4. The connection of the Soul to the body during the life of the Grave
    5. The connection of the Soul to the body in the Afterlife. This is the most complete connection, after this there is no more dearth

Extra Points:

  • Question: How can the Angles appear to the person in the Grave whilst we do not see anything?
  • Question: What about those who died with doubt? how will they answer the questions?

Q&A:

  • Where is the soul before it comes to the body
  • What If a baby dies before the soul is breathed into it (i.e. before 4 months of pregnancy)?
  • Does a baby who dies go directly to Paradise?
