Ways the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade Shirk & prevented it’s avenues

  • 1. By preventing speech which compares anything to Allah
    • The man who said to the Prophet (ﷺ) “Whatever Allah wills and you”
    • What are other some other examples?
    • What if you said something like this but didn’t mean it?
    • Saying “Oh Muhammad (ﷺ)” or calling on anyone besides Allah
  • 2. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned  us regarding the graveyards, and forbade exaggerating in the love for the deceased and also forbade making the grave like shrine
    • Are modern tombstones and decorations the same as making the grave as a shrine?
    • Look at the graveyard Baqee’ in Madinah where the companions are buried as an example, we must base our actions on the Qur’an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the pious predecessors
  • 3. The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade placing graves inside the mosques
    • What did the Prophet (ﷺ) say before he passed away about this?
    • What if someone uses the grave of the Prophet (ﷺ) as an excuse for? Where was the Prophet (ﷺ) at the time of his death?
    • The great error of the Sufis and other misguided sects which bury their leaders in their mosques
  • 4. The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited us from initiating the disbelievers
    • It is forbidden to pray during the time the sun is rising and setting, why is this forbidden?
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) also forbade us from sacrificing animals in specific places where the polytheist carry out their festivals or sacrifices
    • Allah has forbidden in the Qur’an for us to pray in mosques which were not built for his sake
  • 5. The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade going out on sacred journey except to three places, these are the Masjid Al-Haraam in Makkah, The Prophets (ﷺ) Mosque in Madinah and Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem
    • Why is this the case?
  • 6. The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade us from exaggerating in his praise
    • The Christians elevated the praise of Isaa (may peace be upon him) to such an extent that they ended up worshipping him
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us not to raise him behind his status, rather he commanded us to say that he is a servant, so we say that he is the servant of Allah and his messenger
    • Some Muslims (e.g. Sufis) make fabricated, innovated and exaggerated claims about the Prophet (ﷺ)
  • 7. The impermissibility of vowing in a place where the polytheists used to carry out their activities

The Wisdom behind this

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade all the above to cut off the avenues of Shirk
  • Allah will not forgive anyone who dies upon Shirk and there is a great consequence for it in the Hereafter
  • In regarding the

The Graves

  • This (i.e. going to the graves to make dua through the deceases, or to them, or sacrificing something for them) is an issue and avenue to Shirk that many of the Muslims have fallen into unfortunately

Q&A:

  • Are you allowed to make dua FOR the deceased
  • Some people go to the graveyard and collect soil from the grave of a deceased person (e.g. a sheikh or “awliya”) as a form of blessing, is this allowed? Was this done at the time of the Prophet (ﷺ)
  • In some graves they use cement to seal the grave, is this ok as long
  • What acts of worship are permissible in the graves
  • What if you go to a mosque and you see “Allah” written on a picture and also you see “Muhammad” written on another one, and they are the same height, is this allowed?
  • Are you allowed to mark the grave to identify it?
