Hadith 37 (Righteous Deeds Explained)

  • From Ibn ʿAbbās (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhumā), from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam), from that which he narrates from His Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, that He said, “Allāh has written down the good deeds and the bad deeds.” Then he explained it [by saying that], “He who considered doing a good deed and has not done it, Allāh writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he considered doing it and has done it, Allāh writes it down with Himself as from ten good deeds to seven hundred times, or many times over. But if he considered doing a bad deed and has not done it, Allāh writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he considered doing it and has done it, Allāh writes it down as one bad deed.” [Related by al-Bukhārī, Muslim]

Summary of Benefits

  1. The affirmation that good deeds and evil deeds are written down
  2. From the favour of Allah is that he multiplies the reward for the good deeds
  3. From the fairness and justice of Allah is that he does not multiply the evil deeds
  4. That Allah rewards for the mere genuine intention of wanting to do a good deed
  5. That the one who intends to do an evil deed, but then he or she leaves it for the sake of Allah, then because of this a complete good deed is written down for him or her
  6. In this hadith there is an encouragement to perform good deeds and stay away from the evil deeds

——-Hadith 38——

Hadith 38 (The Awliyāʾ of Allāh)

  • From Abū Hurayrah (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) who said: “The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam) said: Allāh, the Exalted, says, “Whoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, I shall be at war with him. My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory deeds until I love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it.” [Related by Al-Bukhārī]

Summary of Benefits

  1. The virtue of the allies of Allah is highlighted as well as the severe danger in showing enmity towards them 
  2. Being an ally of Allah is obtained by performing the obligatory and supererogatory deeds 
  3. That the most beloved of deeds via which a person can draw closer to Allah is to perform the obligations 
  4. The attribute of Love has been established and affirmed for Allah in this hadith
  5. In this hadith we can see that actions vary in degrees with regards to Allah’s Love for them
  6. The one who attains the love of Allah, then he or she will be directed by Allah
  7. When Allah Loves you, then your supplications will be answered and you will receive protection from whatever you fear
  8. The reward of Allah for a slave manifests by Allah answering whatever the slave wants and saving him from that which he fears

——-Hadith 39——

Hadith 39 (Mistakes and Forgetfulness)

  • From Ibn ʿAbbās (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhumā) that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam) said, “Allāh has overlooked my people for me, for [their] mistakes, [their] forgetfulness and for what they have done under compulsion.” [Related by Ibn Mājah, al-Bayhaqī]
  • The explanation to this hadith is split into 2 parts

Part 1: Concerning the statement of the Messenger of Allah () “Allāh has overlooked my people for me..”

  • What does “my people” or “my Ummah”? There are two possible meanings, which one did the Prophet indicate in his statement?
    • This could be all of humanity (those who are called to the message)
    • It could also mean the Muslims (those who answer the call)
  • What does meant by “mistake” here? What are some examples?
  • What is meant by “forgetfulness” here? Examples?
  • What are some examples of being forced to do a bad deed?
  • What is mentioned in the Qur’an about all of this?
  • If someone harms another person either by mistake or forgetfulness, then he is not sinful for that, however does he have to compensate the other person?
  • If someone is forced to kill another person, then how is this situation to be understood and dealt with? Is his sin forgiven? Or is he held accountable now?

Part 2: Summary of Benefits

  1. This hadith highlights to us the vast mercy, favour and kindness of Allah toward his servants
  2. The accountability for having committed a mistake is lifted. If you forget to do a good deed you make it up, and if you mistakenly harm others you compensate them

——-Hadith 40——

Hadith 40 (Be in the World as a Stranger)

  • From Ibn ʿUmar (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhumā) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam) took me by the shoulder and said, “Be in the world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.” And Ibn ʿUmar used to say, “At evening do not expect (to live till) morning, and at morning do not expect (to live till) evening. Take from your health for your illness and from your life for your death.” [Related by Al-Bukhārī]
  • The explanation to this hadith is split into 5 parts

Part 1: Concerning the statement of Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) “The Messenger of Allāh () took me by the shoulder”…

  • Why did the Prophet () do this?
  • What are the virtues of this?
  • What is the significance of this?

Part 2: Concerning the statement of the Messenger of Allah () “Be in the world as though you were a stranger or a traveller

  • Who is a stranger?
  • Who is a passer by or traveller?
  • Why did our Prophet (instruct us to be like a stranger or traveller?
  • What journey are we all embarking upon?
  • How can a person prepare for his or her afterlife?
  • What is the best provision? 
  • What is the reality of this world? 
  • And what is the reality of the afterlife?

Part 3: Concerning the statement of Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) “At evening do not expect (to live till) morning…”

  • The keenness of the companions in implementing the advice of the Messenger of Allah ()
  • The wisdom of Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)
  • How did the companions behave? How did they value their time?

Part 4: Concerning the statement of Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) “Take from your health for your illness and from your life for your death

  • What does this mean? How should one understand this?
