Lesson 20: Mockery of Allah, His verses or His Messenger

Read by our brother Abu Muadh Taqweem

Summary:

  • Mocking Allah, His Verses and His Messenger (ﷺ) negates ones Islam
  • Every Muslim must respect Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger (ﷺ) and the Scholars of the Muslims
  • What if someone does this jokingly?
  • What if it is done without knowing?

The One who does this type of ridicule

  • Making ridicule of Allah, His verses or His Messenger, Muhammad (ﷺ), negates one’s Islam and takes him or her outside of the fold of Islam
  • Every Muslim should know about what types of speech or words fall into this ruling as it is a serious matter
  • What does Allah say about this in the Qur’an? [ see Surah At-Taubah (The Repentance) verses 65-66]
  • What was the context behind these verses?
  • What do learn from this?
  • What about mocking the Sunnah of the Messenger (ﷺ) or his companions?

Modern day issues

  • Some dawah organisations (e.g. Al-Maghrib Institute) have a dangerous approach to spreading their message, they use lighthearted methods which may fall into ridicule and mocking the religion

Mockery of Knowledge and the Scholars

  • Having no respect for knowledge and the people of knowledge (the Scholars) and mocking them  is also a mockery of the religion

The Issue of intent

  • If someone mocks Allah or his Messenger (ﷺ) and he says “but I didn’t mean it” does this count? Is it a valid excuse?
  • When it comes to Allah or His Messenger (ﷺ) then there is no place for jokes or mockery

Actions of ridicule

  • We know about words and statements used to mock, but can actions be seen as mocking or ridiculing Allah, His verses or His Messenger (ﷺ)?
  • For example, having a pulling the tongue, twisting the lips as mockery
  • What did Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Abdulwahhaab say about this?

Belief and Disbelief

  • In the context of the verses above, those hypocrites who mocked Allah and His Messenger
  • Does having belief in Allah necessitate specific  actions from that person?
  • Is it possible for someone to believe in Allah and yet mock Him?
  • What did Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah say?
  • What is mentioned in the Qur’an about this?

Islamic Law (Sharia)

  • What about those who criticise the Sharia?
  • If a person, who claims to be a “modernist”, says the Sharia (Allah’s Law) is outdated or unjust towards Women etc, is this a type of mockery

Q&A:

  • What if someone does not know something is Sunnah, yet it is actually from the Sunnah and they mock it, How can you advise them if they are an elder?
  • If someone falls into mockery out of ignorance, is this disbelief? What about if they do it knowingly?
  • Patience with explaining to parents
  • There is a Hadith about camel urine being used as medicine, what if a “scientist” says this was only applicable at the time of the Prophet (ﷺ)?
  • The verses (65-66) in Surah At-Taubah (The Repentance) mention that the hypocrites disbelieved after their faith, does this mean they were Muslims before doing the mockery?

Next chapter: Acts that people do which are acts of Shirk or acts that lead to Shirk (e.g. amulets)
