Why is Picture making Prohibited in Islam?
- What is meant by “picture making”?
- The origin of Shirk (polytheism) was in picture making and people became attached to them
- It is an attempt to imitate the creation of Allah, indeed it is only Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, who creates, gives form to living things, and gives them souls
- Allah’s challenge to the picture makers
- Is one allowed to draw pictures of things that do not have souls in them e.g. trees, mountains etc?
- Unfortunately these days those who make pictures of humans or animals are praised as “artists” or bring “creative”
Evidence of the severity of the punishment of the picture maker
- Hadith of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Hadith of ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) [Sahih Bukhari & Muslim]
- Hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) [Sahih Bukhari & Muslim]
- Hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) [Sahih Bukhari & Muslim]
Arguments of the Polytheists throughout time
- Someone who says “We found our forefathers doing this, therefore we will follow them”
- Why is this wrong?
- When is it correct to follow forefather and when is it not correct?
- Someone who says “I say Laa Ilaaha Illallaah, therefore I will not be punished if I make dua to the deceased”
- What did the Prophet (ﷺ) say about this?
