Lesson 19: Hadith 9 (Part 8) and Hadith 10 (Parts 1-3)

  • Hadith 9:
    • On the authority of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshiped in truth except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and to establish the prayer and pay the zakat. Then If they do that then their blood and wealth are safe from me except by the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah, The Exalted.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
  • The explanation of this hadith is split into 8 parts
  • We did Part 1 (regarding  The statement of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) “I have been commanded to fight the people…”) in Lesson 16, Parts 2-7 in Lesson 17
  • Recap of previous lesson

Part 8: Summary of Benefits

  • 1. The obligation of abandoning and leaving everything that Allah and his Messenger have made haraam
  • 2. The obligation of performing and leaving everything that Allah and his Messenger have made obligatory
  • 3. Caution against falling into what the people of the Book fell into
  • 4. A person is not obligated with anything that is beyond his ability
  • 5. The one who is unable to do something in its entirety then he suffices with doing what he is able to do
  • 6. A person should limit himself to asking those questions which he is in need of and should leave off asking excessive questioning

Hadith 10

  • On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Indeed Allah the Most High is Good and accepts only that which is good. And indeed Allah has commanded the believers to do that which He has commanded the Messengers. So the Almighty has said: “O (you) Messengers! Eat of the goodly things, and perform righteous deeds.” [23:51] and the Almighty has said: “O you who believe! Eat of the goodly things that We have provided you.” [2:172]” Then he (ﷺ) mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky [saying] “O My Lord! O My  Lord!,” while his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, and his clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram, so how can [his supplication] be answered?” [Sahih Muslim]
  • The explanation of this hadith is split into 4 parts

Part 1: The statement of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) “Indeed Allah the Most High is Good and accepts only that which is good”

  • This indicates that from Allah’s names is Ad-Dayyib (The Good)
  • He accepts only that which is good and pure
  • This is general for all actions including worship, earnings etc

Part 2: The statement of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) “And indeed Allah has commanded the believers to do that which He has commanded the Messengers”

  • Allah, the Most High, has ordered the messengers to eat from the goodly, pure, Halal food
  • Qur’an verse: “O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Taiyibat [all kinds of Halal (legal) foods which Allah has made legal (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.], and do righteous deeds. Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do.” [Surah Al-Mu’minuun (The Believers) verse 51]
  • Therefore if this is what the Messengers have been commanded with, and you as a Muslim follow this, then you are following the best of Mankind
  • The opposite of this is true, what is the effect of this?

Part 3: The case of the Man mentioned

  • Allah will not accept anything except that which is pure and good
  • Among mankind there are those who go against this and their food, nurishment, clothing and earnings are haraam
  • These things can be haraam by itself (e.g. Alcohol) or haraam by how it was acquired (e.g. stealing something)
  • There are things which can make your dua more likely to be answered
  • But there are also things which will block your dua from answered
  • How was this man’s dua affected?
