Lesson 34: Supplications for the Morning

    • Narration from Imam Ahmad Ibn Abdirrahmaan Ibn Abzaa (may Allah be pleased with him) (Reported in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad, vol 3, page 407, declared Sahih by Al-Albaani)
      • The Prophet (ﷺ) thanks Allah for awakening upon the “fitrah”
      • What is the fitrah?
      • The verse: “So set you (O Muhammad SAW) your face towards the religion of pure Islamic Monotheism Hanifa (worship none but Allah Alone) Allah’s Fitrah (i.e. Allah’s Islamic Monotheism), with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalq-illah (i.e. the Religion of Allah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol 21, Page 41]” [Surah Ar-Rūm (The Romans) verse 30]
      • Indeed the blessing of Allah upon his servant is great
      • Arising in the morning upon the sound religion of Islam
      • The great importance of Tawheed (Islamic monotheism)
      • The statement of Sufyaan Ibn Uyaina

  • The verse:”And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said to his father and his people: “Verily, I am innocent of what you worship. Except Him (i.e. I worship none but Allah Alone) Who did create me, and verily, He will guide me.” And he made it [i.e. La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone)] a Word lasting among his offspring (True Monotheism), that they may turn back (i.e. to repent to Allah or receive admonition).” [Surah Az-Zukhruf () verse]
    • The verse: “Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals – cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah, or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns – and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal – unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) – and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An-Nusub (stone altars). (Forbidden) also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allah and sin). This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-mentioned meats), then surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah (The Table Spread with Food) verse 3]
    • The status of Ibrāheem (Abraham) (may Allah be pleased with him) and other Prophets and Messengers in Islam
    • The verse:“Say (O Muhammad SAW): “Truly, my Lord has guided me to a Straight Path, a right religion, the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham), Hanifa [i.e. the true Islamic Monotheism – to believe in One God (Allah i.e. to worship none but Allah, Alone)] and he was not of Al-Mushrikun (see V. 2:105).””[Surah Al-An’ām (The Cattle) verse 161]
    • All of the previous Prophets and Messengers were upon Islamic monotheism
    • It was narrated from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (ﷺ) performed the Fajr (morning) prayer, while he said the Salam, he would say: ‘Allaahumma innii as’aluka ‘ilman naafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision and accepted deeds).’” [Musnad Imam Ahmad, Sunan Ibn Majah]
      • Why is this supplication said in the morning?
      • The importance of these three matters
      • The one who makes objectives for himself early in the morning is better than the one who wakes up without any goals and wastes his day
      • Asking for the beneficial knowledge comes first before gaining provision and performing actions. Therefore asking Allah for beneficial knowledge will set a good foundation for the other things
      • The Verse: “So know (O Muhammad (ﷺ)) that La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest (in your homes).” [Surah Muhammad verse 19]
      • The verse above is a proof for knowledge preceding statements and actions
      • Beneficial Knowledge allows one to distinguish between halal and haraam provisions or actions, hence the importance of it
      • The importance of deeds being accepted
  • Q&A:
    • Looking around during prayer
    • Forgetfulness during prayer
    • If one is in front of the Ka’bah where does one look
    • Can one pray inside the Ka’bah?
