Today we covered the descriptions of the prayer

“Pray as you have seen me pray” (Bukhari)

When the prophet stood up to pray he would:

  1. Face the qiblah, raise his hands (palms facing the qiblah) and say Allahu Akbar
    • raising the hands to about the level of the shoulders or ears
  2. Place the right hand on the left on the chest
  3. Recite the opening supplication
    • There are multiple different supplications, you can recite different ones on different occasions
  4. Say the Ta’awwudh
  5. Read al-Faatihah and say Aameen at the end
  6. Recite any Surah after that
    • There are certain prayers where certain surahs are sunnah to read – eg to recite long surahs in Fajr.
    • Both rak’ahs in Fajr and the first two of Maghrib & Isha are to be recited loud. All the remaining quietly.
    • The first rak’ah should always be longer than the second
    • What should you do if you don’t know much of the Qur’an? What if you don’t know any?
  7. Raise his hands and bow (rukoo’)
    • Where should the hands be placed?
    • How should your back be when in rukoo’?
    • What is the dua that should be recited?
  8. Raise the hands, stand up and say sam’iAllahu liman hamidah
  9. Say rabbana walakalhamd when standing
    • Where should you put your hands?
  10. Then he would say Allahu Akbar and then prostrate
    • How many body parts should you prostrate upon?
    • How should they be placed on the floor?
    • What du’a should you recite? How many times?
  11. Raise from the sujood and sit
    • How should you sit?
    • Where are the feet placed during this sitting?
    • Where do you place your hands?
    • What dua should you recite? How many times?
  12. Then say Allahu Akbar and prostrate (sujood) again.
    • During sujood, one should make dua for himself/herself
  13. Repeat the same as above, to start the second rak’ah
    • The opening dua is not recited in the second rak’ah
  14. Sit down at the end of the second rak’ah (in the same way as he sat between the two sujoods)
    • Recite the tashahhud
    • How are the hands placed on the thighs?
    • How should you place the right hand in particular?
    • Where should you be looking?
    • You can recite the peace and blessings upon the prophet too.
    • What should you do if the imam you pray behind, prays too fast?

+ a range of different scenarios and how to deal with them
